Molto diverso da altri libri di Updike che ho letto. I found in this book that I was able to enjoy Updike’s beautiful writing style without being cop by his characters. Heart of Darkness is a must read. Updike usually writes about sex, politics and race, and The Coup is no different.

He’s a technical virtuoso and a true genius but his work is often too difficult to engage. In the Coup you just get misogyny with some racism. Infinitely more readable than Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ portrait of a dictator, yet still rings true.

During the passing jhn Updike, I took and reread my favorite parts in the hilarious novel. Still a great read. Scoop is a comic masterpiece.

His writing is magnificent and his descriptions are wildly detailed, but his characters don’t rise much above the level of satire. The parts of Kubla Khan I remember best and enjoy the most are the ones that I had a brief recording of. Read at least until you laugh at his jokes.
Didn’t Jihn daughter marry an Obama Sr. The only thing of Updike’s I’ve read in decades was “The Witches of Eastwick,” which I thought was absolute dreck punctured now and again by a brilliant sentence. Tennessee Williams and Ellen Gilchrist are supreme prose stylists. It’s also quite surreal and bizarre, traits that are generally only hinted at in Updike’s other work.
