After all, the game is based on the Cthulhu Mythos, spawned by Lovecraft and his circle of friends, so any encyclopedia must gather in all the source material. The idea that the reader is given the pieces but it is up to them what they create with it. This second edition of Encyclopedia Cthulhiana has been extensively revised and contains over a hundred and fifty additional pages and scores of new entries. First the update – the entries have been updated and some small errors I could not find them the author declared them have been corrected but there are also totally new sections and a rethink of Okay I will have to admit that if you already have the Encyclopaedia Cthulhiana 1st edition this is not really one for you – I had the chance of picking the second edition up cheap.
Elder Sign Press even told me that they’d sell me a copy of the book autographed by Harms himself for no extra cost! Rather think about whether you’ll want an explanation for something which is in it’s original for unexplained or unexplainable.

First I suppose I should say what this book is not.
Suspense in Lovecraft’s fiction is based on the fear for the unknown, and consequently the encyclopedic approach is unintentionally comical, for example the entry: This is a hard book to read – yes it is exactly what it says it is – an encyclopaedia so as you can imagine its impossible to read from one cover encyyclopedia the other linearly, or at least incredibly difficult to do so. Daniel Harms has complied a book that is both a great academic tool for Mythos writers as well as simply a wonderful read.
Bravo and thank you, Mr. Lovecraft’s tales chtulhiana a blend of fantasy, science fiction, and horror, with the latter being especially prominent. That is why this excellently written and designed reference is truly a treasure to the serious reader.

Very handy for those who are doing writing that ties into the Cthulhu Mythos of H. There was, I think, a very even handed description of the role and contributions of August Derleth, always a contentious subject for mythos fans.
Three-fifths of the Appendix relate to its history, location, and contents. Daniel Harms is a writer, author and librarian living in upstate New York. It is my belief that you should not attept to quantify or qualify or in any other way explain any horror material, especially Lovecraftian.
This beautiful, exhaustive treatment of Things Mythos should be included in the library of anyone at all interested in the works of H P Lovecraft and his colleagues, as it includes entries on just about Every. His tales describe a pantheon of powerful beings known as the Great Old Ones. However so not for a second think that this is a rehash or at best a simple update.
What this book does provide is a detailed description of those entities, characters, tomes, places and critters that populate the worlds of Cthulhu Mythos fiction. Whether you are a writer, gamer or an enthusiast of HP Lovecraft and other horrors, this book is highly recommended.
