Maugham draws Darrell as an esoteric seeker after perfection who walks away from the material world and chases his own agenda, in stark contrast to the more worldly pursuits of his friends. One surprise to me is that none of Maugham’s characters chose love.

For the first few chapters of the book, I agree with Somersset review that Maugham’s ma Who knew the male version of Eat, Pray, Love already existed before Elizabeth Gilbert published her own fulo I should add, however, that except for this conversation I should not have thought it worth while to write this book.

If you don’t wish to spend the time reading this, the film version starring Bill Murray in one of his first dramatic roles is fantastic, and very faithful to the novel. Not even the near omniscient philosopher is shown to be the perfect answer to what a life should hope to achieve. Thanks for telling us about the problem. He spoke French even before he spoke a word of English, a fact to which some critics attribute the purity of his style.
Characters that leap off the page in their own way. He was himself the narrator and he told the story as a writer-friend of the other protagonists. He writes like a romanticist but without the anchors of suffering and morality, forgoing those in favor of optimism.
He did manual labor first, to experience it, and then as a means of survival. The main point of this one, I guess, is the story of a young man who goes off to war and who has his life saved by a friend who subsequently dies due to rescuing him. Want to Read saving…. Darrell turns it down, he doesn’t want to sell bonds, who does?

What I really liked about this novel was Maugham’s utilization of the omniscient AND first-person narrator himself! My youngest daughter came home from college the other day with this book under her arm. Gray, to be one of the guys in business. If I have given the reader an impression that Elliot Templeton was a despicable character, I have done him an injustice. There is a tenderness to his writing and there always seems to be at least one character who plays the role of the lost soul.
