This dark vision of cynicism, illustrating the bestial qualities of men and the law of the jungle, where ethics, noble ideas and holy feelings turn against those who believe in them, are, as the author intended, at the same time a denunciation chhlopi industrialisation and urbanisation. First tome was awful but the more pages you’ve read the better it was. One of the best Polish books and my favourite. Niewielka czesc jego spuscizny stanowia wiersze. The novel’s setting was destined to be the center of the Holocaust only 40 years later, so the antisemitism was a fact of life in that time and place.
There are no discussion topics on this book yet. All in all, from Reymont’s books I prefer his Promised Land – in my humble opinion it is much interesting than Pesants. The repertoire of human experience and the richness of spiritual life, which can be compared with the repertoire of Biblical books and Greek myths, has no doctrinal ideas or didactic exemplifications.

Such a complex and thourough description of the old Polish countryside, the life of peasants and not of the gentry – reymmont ,old customs – and all this in a beutiful language.
I so didn’t love it.
