Though art and science are traditionally considered antithetical disciplines–with art dependent on intuition for its development and science on logic and sequential thinking–both nevertheless rely on an initial burst of inspiration regarding the nature of reality, and in Western culture the two have followed separate but remarkably similar paths.

Art, Science, and Spirituality. Since I’m interested in art and never had physics, I was intrigued by the title. Pretty mystical stuff for a surgeon-turned-popular science writer. It could be as simple as an idea that’s time has come suddenly reveals itself to all of us as plain as the full moon in a clear night sky and yet it is only a few that can see it. Van Gogh once wrote, “A child in the cradle has the infinite in its eye” Here the author is referring to general relativity.

I believe outsiders to an established discipline can often see patterns, make connections or hazard hypotheses that a trained professional either could not or would not do. The fact that the book has many pictures helps.

That question pulls Shlain into ,eonard territory. In my opinion this statement, in its generality, is virtually meaningless. It is not possible to be in a rest frame of a photon.
What, he wondered, was modern art trying to communicate, and why was so much of modern art difficult to comprehend?
For example, the stable inertial frame so important for classical mechanics is compared to the transition to a dominant mode in classical music. Like another wonderful book of his “The Goddess VS the Alphabet,” Shlain is not coming at his subject as an expert but rather as a curious person.
